Developmental Differences on Cognitive Inhibition in Children and Adults: Evidence from Vigilance Task
نویسندگان
چکیده
The following study was carried out to know the developmental differences in cognitive inhibition between children and adults using auditory and visual vigilance tasks. A total of 62 Kannada – English bilingual speakers participated, divided into two groups. Test stimuli consisted of single digit numbers (1 to 9), presented randomly through headphones for the auditory vigilance task and visual presentation of the digits on a white screen for the visual vigilance task. Subjects were instructed to pay attention only to the target digit <6>, and to press the key as quickly and accurately as possible. DmDx software was programmed to recognize this as the genuine response. The reaction time (RT) and accuracy rate were calculated in milliseconds and percentage respectively. Results revealed significant difference across age groups for RT and accuracy rate. The findings of the study indicated slower reaction time and reduced accuracy rate in younger children, supporting the hypothesis of cognitive inhibition.

Recourse Allocation in Young and Elderly Adults
Objectives: The role of cognitive process for postural control was shown in dual task studies. However, there was no definite evidence how verbal instructions influence the allocation of attention to postural control. This study determined whether young and elderly adult are able to deliberately control the resource allocation when performing a sensorimotor and cognitive task simultaneously and...
متن کاملRisk-Taking Behavior Under the Effect of Emotional Stimuli Among Children and Adults
Risk-taking has an important role in human’s life, either positive or negative. Thus, finding a method to control or drive this in a particular way could affect individuals and communities’ health by discouraging negative risks such as reckless driving or encouraging positive risks. Emotion induction is one of the methods that can enhance or reinforce risk-taking according to the perceived emot...

Background & Objective: Stuttering is a prevalent disorder in children and adolescents. Because attention is the only fuel resource for cognitive functions and the language have high cognitive functions, then it is possible that speech difficulties are related to attention deficit. The purpose of this study was to investigate the attentional demand of speech in children and adolescents with dev...
متن کاملAge differences in memory control: evidence from updating and retrieval-practice tasks.
Some contemporary approaches suggest that inhibitory mechanisms play an important role in cognitive development. In addition, several authors distinguish between intentional and unintentional inhibitory processes in cognition. We report two experiments aimed at exploring possible developmental changes in these two types of inhibitory mechanisms. In Experiment 1, an updating task was used. This ...
